Genomics is now embedded in everyday general practice — from pregnancy and paediatrics to familial cancer and chronic disease. A newly launched national education hub is ensuring Australian GPs can access the practical tools and training they need.
The PRECISE Genomics in Primary Care learning hub, powered by Medcast, has been developed specifically to give GPs rapid, point-of-care access to trusted, Australian-specific genomics education that fits seamlessly into busy clinical workflows.
The launch follows a newly published article in the Australian Journal of General Practice highlighting the expanding role of GPs in recognising genetic red flags, initiating first-tier testing and coordinating timely referrals across the lifespan.
A practical response to GP needs
The PRECISE project (Practitioner Readiness, Education, Capabilities with Implementation Science Evaluation) is funded by the Medical Research Future Fund through the Genomics Health Futures Mission. It was established to embed genomics and precision medicine into primary care in a way that is practical, equitable and clinically meaningful.
GPs consistently report needing concise, clinically relevant genomics guidance, clarity around referral pathways, and resources that support confident decision-making within time-pressured consultations. The PRECISE hub has been designed with Australian GPs in mind to meet these needs directly.
Hosted by Medcast, the online hub provides:
point-of-care decision guides across key genetics topics
clear, practical genetic testing guidance developed with Australian GPs
case-based webinars covering pregnancy and cancer genetics
short e-learning modules, mini-audits and podcasts tailored to primary care
All resources are designed to be immediately applicable in everyday practice.
Supporting confident, timely care
Dr Alan Ma, Clinical Geneticist at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Westmead and PRECISE Chief Investigator at the University of Sydney, said genomics is now integral to modern general practice.
Medcast plays a key role in translating complex genomic science into usable, practice-ready learning. The hub enables clinicians to access evidence-based education and decision-support tools at the point they are needed — supporting consistent and clinically appropriate use of genomics across Australia.
National access available now
The PRECISE Genomics in Primary Care learning hub is now available to Australian GPs nationwide.

An increasing number of pregnant patients are seeking advice from their GP about prenatal genetic testing. This FastTrack covers non-invasive prenatal testing/screening, including how it works, indications, limitations, and different types of testing panels. 30mins each of RP and EA CPD available.
Reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) may be considered for patients during their preconception counselling stage. This FastTrack covers who should be offered RGCS, which conditions it screens for, and what to do with the results. 30mins each of RP and EA CPD available.
