Providing advice about alcohol for safe breastfeeding

The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) bring you this webinar presented by experts in the field.

This webinar provides current best-practice guidance to increase the knowledge and skills of health professionals in providing advice about alcohol use and breastfeeding.  Research conducted in 2022 highlighted gaps in knowledge and misperceptions about the risks of drinking alcohol during breastfeeding, and effective strategies to minimise these risks, among both women who breastfeed and healthcare professionals.

The session will provide participants with an understanding of:

  • Current advice on alcohol and breastfeeding in the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol.
  • The physiology of alcohol entering and leaving breastmilk.
  • Effects of alcohol on breastmilk supply and ejection.
  • Effects of alcohol on infants’ sleep, behaviour and development.
  • Evidence-based harm minimisation strategies to reduce the risk of infants consuming milk containing alcohol.

A case study will illustrate how advice can be provided as part of postnatal care.
