Our 2 day Basic and Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is similar to the ALS2 Course. They are based on the same guidelines and largely cover the same topics. If you do our ALS course, you will cover everything from the ALS1 course and most things from the ALS 2 course. The main difference is that in the ALS2 course there is more focus on Arterial Blood Gasses and arrhythmias that are not life threatening.
If for some reason your workplace specifically requires you to have the ARC ALS2 then you need to contact one of their course centres. If however you simply need to complete a nationally accredited ALS course that covers the ARC and international guidelines, our course is perfect for you.
The ALS2 courses, for example, are conducted by ARC Course centres and will typically be more expensive in part because they pay royalties back to the ARC. The ARC does not actually accredit courses, rather they licence their own course out.
Our ALS course has accreditation with various medical colleges including the RACGP, ACRRM, ANZCA, RANZCR and is also recognised by many others including the RACP. It is also endorsed by ACPAN. Being nationally accredited and internationally recognized, our ALS courses are widely accepted by public and private hospitals, healthcare organisations, the Australian Defence Force, rural and remote health including the resource industry.
We apply a validity period of 3 years to our ALS course which keeps in line with medical practitioners who need to complete it once per triennium. That being said, annual recertification and frequent review of ALS practice in line with ANZCOR guidelines is recommended.
Yes, if you only need to cover Basic Life Support with anaphylaxis and use of AEDs you can attend Day 1 only. If you wish to attend Day 2 only you need to have previously completed a comprehensive BLS or ALS1 course in the past 12 months. A CPR session provided by a first aid organisation does not meet this requirement.
No, our ALS course is open to anyone who wants to attend. Please keep in mind however that the program is presented at a post graduate level and is aimed at health practitioners typically working in healthcare environments.
Once you’ve registered for the course, you will be sent a link to our self-directed ECG pre-reading package. Completion of this package is required prior to attendance at the course. Some of this material will then be reviewed on Day 2 of the ALS Course.
The main groups of people who need to complete the assessment are those teaching and assessing in their own hospital, or those on Cardiac Arrest and MET teams. Also anyone who is covering a hospital as the sole ALS provider needs to be assessed as competent.
Assessments consist of a theory component which is completed via a multiple choice exam and then a scenario based practical component conducted either 1:1 or 2:1 with an assessor.
Per the ANZCOR guidelines, annual recertification and frequent review of ALS practice is recommended. As such the assessment of competency is valid for 12 months.
The RACGP and ACRRM require fellows to complete a multiple choice exam as a reinforcing activity, but not the practical part of the assessment.
Our ALS course is eligible for both a 2 day Emergency grant and a 2 day Anaesthetics grant with the RACGP.
