Module 3: Patient therapeutics - Anaesthesia, analgesia & antiemetics

Patient therapeutics in the context of anaesthesia, analgesia & antiemetics is an essential component of perioperative care, covering a broad range of medications and strategies used to enhance patient outcomes during and after surgical procedures.

This module will focus on:

  • Anaesthetic types & agents used to induce a temporary state of unconsciousness or loss of sensation  allowing surgical procedures to be performed without causing pain or distress to the patient ,
  • Analgesics and techniques required to reduce and manage pain, and
  • Antiemetic strategies for preventing and managing post operative nausea & vomiting.

The use of these therapeutics is critical in ensuring patient comfort, safety, and optimal outcomes during surgical procedures. Proper management involves a multidisciplinary approach tailored to the individual needs of each patient, balancing efficacy with the minimization of adverse effects.

Delivered over 2 webinars and interactive eLearning case studies, this module will explore a comprehensive approach to anaesthetic techniques including general anaesthetics, regional anaesthetics and local anaesthetics; updated guideline recommendations for PONV and the ANZCA recommendations for pain management

The first webinar will cover key concepts in anaesthesia including:

  • Inhalational anaesthetic agents
  • Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA)
  • Regional anaesthesia including spinal, epidural, nerve & plexus blocks

The second webinar will cover key concepts in management of post-operative complications of therapeutics including:

  • Acute pain management & pain protocols
  • Post operative nausea & vomiting - prevention, protocols & discharge planning

Following our patient case study from Module 1 & 2, we will discuss the therapeutic options, pharmacology and side effects within the intraoperative and postoperative settings.
