Lunch and Learn: Assessing the unwell child with the Paediatric Assessment Triangle

As part of our Lunch and Learn Series, this webinar will focus on the use of the Paediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT), a critical tool in paediatric care.

Introduction to the Paediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT)

The PAT is an efficient visual assessment tool, integral in rapidly identifying critically ill children. Its adoption in Australia has led to improvement in patient outcomes. A study published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health found that abnormal findings in a child’s appearance were strong predictors of severe illness.

Evidence for PAT effectiveness

In Australian healthcare settings, the use of PAT in emergency departments reduced the time to treatment for critical cases by 30% (Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Melbourne). The Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit reported a decrease in mortality rates for conditions like meningococcal disease following the implementation of structured assessment tools including the PAT.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for healthcare professionals, looking to excel in paediatric assessment, thereby enhancing their overall clinical capabilities and impact on paediatric healthcare outcomes.

The PAT has gained empirical support through various studies and clinical applications, highlighting its efficacy as a rapid and systematic approach for assessing paediatric patients, enabling quick identification of those in need of urgent interventions based on visual cues related to appearance, work of breathing, and circulation

Webinar highlights

  • Delve into the three key components of the PAT to learn how to quickly identify signs of distress and illness and use this information to optimise treatment and prevent deterioration.
  • Apply your knowledge to clinical case studies so you can feel confident using the tool in clinical practice, even when under pressure of managing an unwell child.
  • Rapidly identify children who require immediate attention and intervention by determining the severity of a child’s condition based on the findings of the PAT

This webinar is available free to all Australian healthcare professionals. Enrol to attend the live session and engage with the expert presenters. Access to the webinar on demand will be available 1 week after the live event for those enrolled.
