This educational activity helps to fill the gaps in preventive health, health promotion, and education needs for males with diabetes and is proudly supported by the Healthy Male Health Practitioner Advisory Group.
In 2020, the prevalence of diabetes was shown to increase with age. Almost 1 in 5 Australians aged 80–84 are living with diabetes – almost 30 times as high as for those aged under 40 (0.7%). Diabetes is more common in males (4.8%) than females (3.8%). It is also suggested that these prevalence rates are likely to underestimate the [RM1] prevalence in the Australian context – a great reason to learn more about how other signs and symptoms may indicate the development of chronic disease and how early identification in primary care can lead to better outcomes for the people you see. Males are also more likely to be living with co-morbidities whilst managing diabetes, including chronic kidney disease, and heart, stroke and/or other vascular disease.
It is important that health care professionals have a good understanding of how diabetes affects male sexual health, and its importance as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and depression.
