STI and HIV Care in General Practice

GPs play a central role in the prevention, diagnosis and management of sexual healthcare in Australia.  In 2021, GPs performed the majority of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and STI (sexually transmitted infections) testing and diagnosed over a third of HIV cases in NSW.

This course aims to build GPs' and GP registrars' confidence when faced with a variety of sexual health care scenarios. This self-paced online learning covers:

  • Recognising opportunities to routinely offer STI/HIV testing.
  • Assessing patients’ risk of a STI and HIV.
  • Conducting STI/HIV consultations in line with the Australian STI Management Guidelines for use in Primary Care.
  • Undertaking follow-up and contact tracing after a STI diagnosis has been made.

Learners will also be introduced to key NSW resources and support services to assist the delivery of high quality sexual healthcare to patients.
