Hypertension is a very common condition in the Australian population, with a prevalence of approximately 35%.  It is the most common problem managed in Australian general practice, accounting for just over 5% of all problems seen. Hypertension is an important and treatable independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke and premature death. Managing hypertension in a range of patient settings is an essential skill for all GPs.
