Competent airway management is an essential skill in many clinical situations. For the majority of patients, the possibility that their airway may be compromised and may prove difficult to manage is anticipated and plans and procedures can be put in place to respond and prevent complications.
It is the unanticipated or emergency management of the airway where complications can arise. The most serious complication is where the clinician(s) cannot ventilate, intubate or oxygenate which results in increased patient morbidity and mortality.
A wide variety of techniques and devices are available to assist in the management of the difficult airway. This workshop will review the difficult airway algorithms using a case history approach and focus on the VORTEX approach then review the techniques of apnoeic oxygenation, rapid sequence induction and video laryngoscopy.
Following this, the participants will rotate around workstations where the various techniques and devices will be demonstrated and there will be the opportunity to practice.
This workshop will be generously supported by the trade allowing participants to be exposed to the latest airway management devices.
