Antidepressant use in teens: mini audit

Depression in teens and young adults is both common and serious, with major impacts on health, wellbeing, and even survival. In Australia, almost two in five people aged 16–24 experienced a mental disorder in the past year, and 17% reported depression. Worryingly, suicide remains the leading cause of death among young Australians, highlighting the urgent need for timely and effective treatment. Antidepressant use in this age group has risen sharply: a national study found dispensing rates for adolescents nearly doubled between 2013 and 2021.

While antidepressants are increasingly prescribed among young people (13-24), careful selection is critical to avoid unnecessary harms associated with use. Treatment decisions must weigh efficacy against safety and always incorporate psychological support and shared decision making with the young person, their family, carer and/or supports. Early recognition, non-pharmacological interventions, and evidence-based prescribing can help reduce the burden of depression and its impact in young people.

This mini-audit activity provides you with the tools to conduct a review of your young patients (aged 13-18) who have been prescribed an antidepressant. During the audit, you will be able to review your current management practices against best practice recommendations and reflect on what practice changes you can make, and how you will go about this.

This mini audit reflective activity comprises four core components and one optional component:

  1. Select patient encounter

  2. Review best practice guidance

  3. Reflect on practice

  4. Upload your reflections

  5. Discuss your reflections with peers (optional)

Funded by the Australian Government through the Quality Use of Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Pathology Program.
