Veterans are at significantly higher risk of suicide than the general population. GPs play a critical role in recognising distress, assessing risk, and guiding veterans toward support.
This interactive, case-based session allows participants to engage in a virtual consultation with a veteran patient experiencing suicidal thoughts. Learners can choose either a guided or expert mode to practise applying structured suicide risk assessment frameworks, receive real-time feedback, and strengthen communication skills.
The session includes:
A clinical case study of a veteran in distress
Motivational interviewing and suicide risk assessment practice
Use of referral pathways including Open Arms and DVA-funded services
Guidance on developing collaborative safety plans
Developed by experienced general practitioners and veteran mental health educators, this session offers RACGP-accredited CPD across multiple categories.
Funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs through the Veterans Healthcare eLearning Platform Program.
