Overview

Ideal for lunchtime education or registrar teaching, the resources included in this program are designed to support small group learning sessions for primary care health professionals, including GPs, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams.

The session is built around a detailed clinical case study, promoting interactive discussions about managing depression and anxiety in older adults. This course is tailored to address the unique challenges faced in primary care, with a focus on practical strategies and evidence-based approaches.

The session will:

  • provide guidance on the options available for the treatment of anxiety and/or depression highlighting key considerations when making management decisions for the older adult.
  • explore consumer expectations in terms of treatment options available,including an analysis of the risk-benefits to help set realistic expectations during consultations.
  • highlight the benefit of frequent review of patients on long term antidepressants
  • provide guidance on how best to deprescribe antidepressants to minimise withdrawal symptoms and monitor for relapse
Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, facilitators should be able to:

Prepare and review materials to facilitate a case study discussion on the role of antidepressants in managing depression and anxiety in older adults
Facilitate a 1-hour workshop, including a case study discussion, to explore the use of antidepressants in older adults within general practice
Identify learning needs and areas for further development in clinical practice, and link these to relevant resources and educational materials
Support peers in completing the required learning activities and assist with claiming and logging CPD hours for the session
