Dementia Matters: a practical approach to assessment and nursing care

Medcast, in partnership with Dementia Training Australia, are presenting a three hour program for general practice nurses and other nurses who would like to learn more about dementia.

The population of people aged 65 years and over is increasing worldwide, and with this the prevalence of dementia. Dementia is now the leading cause of disability in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. Team-based primary care can improve health and social outcomes and reduce hospital admissions for people living with dementia and their carer(s).

Caroline Gibson and Professor Dimity Pond will present an interactive session including case studies and group activity. The sessions will cover the role of primary care and the primary care nurse in dementia care, dementia signs, symptoms and diagnosis, impact of dementia on the person, family and community, brain health promotion, recognising cognitive change, assessing cognition and impact on function, communication skills and adapting care in context of cognitive impairment.

Why you should attend

Nurses are uniquely placed to notice changes that may indicate dementia. In this webinar interact with the experts who will share their insights to empower you to act early and make a difference for patients presenting for care. Learn how to recognise early signs of cognitive decline during your day to day interactions and be part of the solution to improve dementia care.

This is a two part series that brings you a person centred approach to dementia focusing on the important role of the nurse particularly within the general practice setting.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe why knowing about dementia matters

  • Understand the key features of dementia

  • Describe the role of the general practice nurse in brain health promotion

  • Use a person-centred approach to provide care to support the person living with dementia and carer(s) health and social well-being needs
