Lunch & Learn: Paediatric Ingestions and Poisoning

Our Lunch and Learn series focuses on providing you with quick updates on a variety of patient care and skills based topics. Live sessions are delivered free, with on demand access available as part of Medcast Plus.

Approximately 10 children a day are admitted to hospital in Australia due to poisoning, most poisonings occur in the home from household cleaning products or over the counter medications. With children's curious nature and exploratory behaviours, accidental ingestions pose a significant risk to their health and well-being.

This 30 minute webinar will focus on the key knowledge and skills to effectively manage paediatric ingestions and poisoning cases. 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify the signs and symptoms of paediatric poisonings focusing on cleaning products, over the counter medications and button battery ingestions 
2. Understand the principles of initial management and stabilisation and when to escalate care dependent on the level of severity or likelihood for harm.
3. List resources and decision making tools that are useful with paediatric poisoning and ingestion presentations.

This webinar is designed for healthcare professionals working in emergency departments, paediatrics and primary care. By attending, participants will gain the confidence and competence needed to provide optimal care to paediatric patients presenting with ingestions and poisoning events.
