End of Life Care for Patients with Dementia

Dementia including Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of death in women, and the second leading cause of death in Australians accounting for over 15 000 deaths in 2019, with overall deaths increasing by 66.8% from 2010-2019  (ABS 2020). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience dementia at a rate of 3 to 5 times higher than the general Australian population (Palliative Care Australia 2018)

End of life care for people with dementia requires specific considerations due to the unpredictable course of the disease.

Join expert speakers Dr Steph Daly and Dr Pete Silberberg from Dementia Training Australia as they take you through the three key aspects of end of life care for patients with dementia focusing on:

Prediction - how to recognise signs of deterioration
Preparation - supporting the patient and family
Communication - ensuring patient cetred goals

"The webinar was very informative, well presented and not only fantastic information for professional reasons but also personal reasons too. Everyone deserves to have input if possible into their end of life care & the more informed we all are in this area the more these sometimes difficult matters can be discussed more openly, providing a better end of life experience for all."

"Very informative, concise update. Excellent refresher and/or introduction to those practitioners new to dementia care. An excellent session to cornerstone the importance of well rounded, holistic, person centred end of life care."

"This course offers some very important strategies and recommendations for dementia end of life care. This care would not be purely given in an aged care setting and so I would recommned this course to anyone who is working as a nurse in a clinical setting."
